New Deer in Aberdeenshire is a farming community of around 3,000 people. For many years it was served by a branch of the Clydesdale Bank, but in 2005 the bank said it was costing too much to keep the branch open and that it would have to close. Local residents were shocked by the announcement. They were sure that their community could support a bank.
