Principles
Google has beliefs and characteristics that everyone in the company is encouraged to share. These are called 'core principles' and they help to maintain the company´s culture.
Innovation, not instant perfection
- It is important to experiment and to be innovative. Therefore it is better to launch products to users quickly even if they are not perfect at launch. Products can then be improved gradually over time. Google aims to launch products "early and often"
- Google believes that a billion minds are better than one. Therefore it welcomes feedback from its many users to help improve its products and this is why it launches products early.
Fast is better than slow
Being fast applies to the products themselves (and how people work at Google!). Google believes that:
- Users don't realise how slow things are until they get something faster
- Users assume it takes time for a webpage to load, but the experience should really be instantaneous.
Focus on the user and all else will follow
- Google believes that if it pleases the user by providing really good products and tools then more and more users will use them. This will encourage more advertisers to work with Google and this in turn will encourage more partners to work with Google. Advertisers, users and partners all need one another and all make the experience better for each other
- If you focus on what competitors are doing, you will become obsessed with the competitors´ products and services and not notice when they pass you. However if you focus on the road ahead, on users' needs, and what advertisers and partners want, you can continue on the path of innovation.
