New product development
Google evaluates a potential new product by asking the following questions:
- Is this good for our users?
- Is this good for our customers and partners?
- Does this solve a big problem?
- Will this transform an industry?
- Is this a long-term solution or short-term fix?
The answers to these questions will guide the people working on the development of the product.
Google deliberately does not focus on what the user 'wants' because it prefers to ask users to say what they 'need'. Google believes that this offers a better solution. As Henry Ford said after he built his first car, "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."
